What Dentists Do

The job duties of the dentist are focused around oral health and the factors that affect it. The areas of expertise are the teeth, gums, and other parts of the mouth. Oral hygiene is a preventive treatment that the dentist recommends the patient undertake. This can include brushing, flossing, special treatments and proper diet choices.

Procedural practices of a dentist help to prevent problems and improve the health of the teeth and gums. Teeth cleanings are the most common procedure, but a dentist can perform other processes such as the repair of teeth that are cracked, fractured, or contain a cavity. It may include a filling for the cavity or sealant to repair the enamel of the tooth. In order to proceed, the dentist has the ability to give anesthetics. The dentist is also capable of prescribing antibiotics or other medications. Dentists also have the ability to correct teeth for a proper bite.

Dentists will need to use various pieces of equipment. Drills, probes, mouth mirrors and forceps are the hand tools while a larger device might include x-ray machine. Other technologies can include digital scanners or lasers. The knowledge may extend beyond the simple operation of the device, but they need to analyze the results of x-rays and scanners.

On top of the dental work, the dentist needs to have business skills to make sure that they have the proper supplies, equipment, and employees. They oversee and employ dental hygienists, dental assistants, and receptionists. All of which are critical components to being able to offer the best dental care to their patients.
